Project 4 review

For this project I had to think of a category or theme for my project to start. I chose Landscapes because that is the type of work I have been focusing on lately and it felt nice to see other examples of landscapes I hadn't seen before. Then I picked out 10 that I enjoyed, explained the piece and the elements and principles used and gave the details about the work. I arranged each slide to look fun and inviting but also professional. This project did not feel like it took me a lot of time because I found it to be quite fun and enjoyable.

Module 13 and 14 Video Review

First Video:BBC Culture Show, Tate Modern
key concepts:
  • People are more likely to respect the institution if it has a sense of principles.
  • sometimes two opposing artist ways go together seamlessly in an exhibition.
  • You don't always need a lot of art history background to understand the right exhibit.
  • The 60s and 70s art is starting to fill a gap for art curators.

Did the video relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project?
Yes, this video was able to give advice on putting together an art exhibit better  in my opinion) better than the other videos. This video had shown many examples in a short amount of time and wasn't an interview style.

Second Video: An Acquiring Mind..
Key Concepts
  • Philippe made an exhibit to span around the globe and century's
  • respects the objects
  • MET owns two perfect manuscripts
  • some paintings chose to create speculation
  • clothes or drapery is also used in the met
  • over 100 curators at the MET with the job to enhance the METs look
  • a "dry run" is done for curators to try to sell the idea of bringing what they want into the museum.
  • bought a piece at action with little to no information on the piece.
  • has a  panel commission for king of Spain in pristine condition  but that does't always happen so the MET has a conservationist to to conserve the work for years and years to come.
  • only place that has a stained glass conservation
  • some pieces need to be left broken
  • some works need to have the perfect room to be seen as they were made to.
  • only Egyptian temple in the western hemisphere gift from Egyptian government.
  • most comprehensive collection of Asian art in the west

Did the video relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project?
Yes, this video helped my understanding of an art curator because it showed the time and all the steps going into making an exhibit.

Third video: The Lowdown on Lowbrow
Key Concepts:
  • lowbrow is a complected opinionated art form mixed with surrealist, sometimes pornography, and pop work
  • started with hot-rods and naked girls with a name that just stuck. Name lowbrow from Robert Williams
  • Pop culture references
  • many lowbrow artist use items that they have or desire, linking the work to consumerism
  • 40s-70s the lowbrow aesthetic
  • McCarthyism happening at the time affected the art.
  • Developing consumerism culture in the US helped spark this type of art.

Did the video relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project?
I felt the video did not relate to our project but it was informational and fun to look at this style which I was not familiar with.

What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
I felt the first two films I watched was very helpful towards my project in understanding everything that went into it but the final video just felt like a video to inform us on a type of art we may not know about or had known the name to. I felt as though all of these videos were in fact informational and enjoyable to watch.

Module 12 video review

First Video: Uncertainty: Modernity and Art
I chose this video because of the mystery sense behind it. I was unsure of what this video was exactly going to detail but it sounded interesting to me.

Key Concepts:

  • After industrial revolution art and way of thinking changes
  • art was idealized now its turned to questioning
  • art now responding to the problem, modern life
  • Picasso started to break the barriers, became unpredictable
  • Hitler stages art exhibitions that told people how to feel
  • grids on New York skyscrapers influenced he Dutch artist to create square and lines of colors that don't look like anything. He is testing purity
  • by putting the right questions together the art can make his/her art make you feel
  • Chinese rushed to American Avant Garde style once freedom of arts happened

This video relates to the text by providing details on how art has progressed through the years by showing various artists and their work and how it changed as the world changed.

I thought this film was kind of all over the place but it showed many art pieces that are not usually in classroom videos and I learned many interesting facts about them.

Second Video: Andy Warhol: Images of an Image
I chose this video because I wanted to be introduced to more of Andy Warhol's work other than the Campbell's soup cans

Key Concepts;
  • Andy Warhol didn't originally want to be and artist
  • Mass consumerism was at a high
  • Repetition work
  • focused on actress life over time
  • used silk screening in most of his work
  • used silk screening as a means to get work out fast to make more money
  • wanted to show how much manufacturing is taking over
  • he wanted his art simply another consumer good like Coca Cola or Campbell's soup
  • was obsessed with celebrity
  • then used Polaroids and paint to add to his work
  • started producing self portraits

This video relates to the text in a way that it shows Warhol's life and how he came to be but the video gave many details and other examples of his art.

I thought the video gave a new insight for me into Andy Warhol's life. It was very informative and put together nicely.

Gallery Visit #2 Burchfeild Penny

The Exhibit
   Title of the exhibit:
Burchfeilds Arboretum, A Celebration of Trees

   Theme:
The artist Charles E. Burchfeild's tree drawings and paintings.

The Gallery:
    Type of lighting used:
Small direct lighting on each piece.

    Wall colors:
        White/ Cream and Dark Blue

   Interior architecture:
Circular concrete looking wall to separate this exhibit from another
Some walls had a gap between the wall itself and the ceiling

Movement of viewer through gallery space:
Movement is fluid and effortless as you more from piece to piece around the room

Art Criticism:
  How is the work organized:

Hung eye level in a line, spaced out.

   How are they similar:
They all portray trees and are by the same artist

   How are the different:
They each have there own feel, some are quick studies and others show detail of a specific wooded area that use different mediums and are quite larger.

   How are they framed:
Some are matted with a simple frame and others, mainly the larger work, has busier, bulkier frames.

   How are identified/ labeled:
Each piece has a small descriptive label to the right of it to share key details of the piece.

What is the proximity of the artwork to each other:
Each piece is about a foot to a foot and a half of each other with the small label in between.

What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?

I felt like focusing more on the space took away with viewing the art because I was worried I was missing something due to being less familiar with architecture. I still gave time to the artwork but felt myself continuing to think about the space around them.

Art work Criticism

              July Sunlight Pouring Down
              Watercolor on paper
              1952
              No size listed

This shows a weeping willow type tree in the center of the page, looking up and in the distance, surrounded by blues and yellow and with what can be interpreted as some wild flowers, tall grass and clovers closer to the picture plane. Color and Shape was used well to show the difference between the trees, sky, and different details without adding detail. The sunlight reminded me of what my great grandmother use to tell me was the stairway to Heaven as a child. I think the artist was trying to show a favorite peaceful place from a different view.

Light coming into the woods.
Watercolor on paper
1954
No size listed

This painting shows different layers to a forest with light crawling through the trees. Value was used very well. This painting is very monochromatic, sticking towards the greyish green colors so concentrating on value helps show the layers of this set of woods without getting mushy or lost details. This reminds me of a calm before the storm kind of look with what looks like fog rolling in. I think the artist was just trying to show these dense woods through his eyes.

Charles E. Burchfeild
Untitled(Elm Across from Buffalo Medical Center)
Conte crayon on paper
1961
No size listed

This piece sows a gentle outline sketch of a tree. Line was used to show the details of the tree without using color or major detail. This just reminded me of pure simplicity. I think the artist was trying to show the beauty of a simple line  drawing.

Mask Making module 10

These are the three masks I chose for inspiration. I really enjoyed the shape and color of them. In these masks, the element and principles at use help create a whole idea/ image intended for their purpose. Color, Line, Repetition, Shape, and Contrast are what I see being the most useful and pronounced elements and principles. Color was used to help show vibrancy of he culture and form the facial shapes. Contrast from the dark material then the bright colors help draw your eye in and help make the piece more fun to look at. Line and repetition was used to emphasize different important facial features such as the eyes.

I started out with a sketch of a elongated mask with textured hair and line and color qualities

My finished mask required color, shape, repetition, and texture.
I believed if I focused on these elements and principles I could make a mask that could resemble such as my reference mask photos.
I used twine to create the hair and blue, red, white, and green for the colors because they were simplistic and earthy. I do think I could have added more or created a better mask with more materials but I did enjoy making this mask and would do it again in the future,

Module 10 Video Review

1. Why did I choose the videos I did:

African Art, I have been interested in this subject for some time now and never really learned much about it besides in grade school. I was excited to see that we touch on the subject and wanted to watch this one.

Buddhism, I also chose this video because of the interest in the subject and the lack of learning it in the past.

2. Key concepts learned:

African Art,

  1. Many objects made of wood and straw, so many artifacts are not more than two hundred years old.
  2. Paintings and carvings have stayed through the years though. Many have been used to ensure a good hunt.
  3. Egyptian ideas spread over Africa.
  4. Bronze statues were being made in Nigeria by the 9th century.
  5. Architectural style of Zimbabwe very different.
  6. Artist like Pablo Picasso was influenced by the African Art.
  7. most African art conceptual.
  8. All African art was used for their daily life or ceremonial purposes.
  9. Art gave a person symbolic power.

Buddhism,
  1. The door to understanding, the gateway to the temple, the torana. Made of granite and has the teachings engraved in it.
  2. Buddha art work has a feel of serenity.
  3. When Buddha died, the belief split into big boat and little boat.
  4. People were able to take wood carving techniques into stone to build large stupas with detail.
  5. 3 umbrellas on top symbolize three stages of heaven.
  6. Largest Buddhist shrine in the world is Bororbudur, in Indonesia.
  7. Kuan Yin Hall completed in 1985
  8. Simplistic beautiful design to the Chinese temples, built in Tang Dynasty

3.How do the videos relate to the text:
The videos relate to the text because they are both giving the best information to understand the culture and put you in their shoes. The text and videos show you how the civilizations grew through their art and how it was used.

4.What was my opinion of the films:
I thought the videos were very informational and gave me the information I was looking for. The Buddhism video was hard to understand but gave good visuals and a background story to help understand he way the Buddhist lived along with their art.
