Module 10 Video Review

1. Why did I choose the videos I did:

African Art, I have been interested in this subject for some time now and never really learned much about it besides in grade school. I was excited to see that we touch on the subject and wanted to watch this one.


Buddhism, I also chose this video because of the interest in the subject and the lack of learning it in the past.



2. Key concepts learned:

African Art,

  1. Many objects made of wood and straw, so many artifacts are not more than two hundred years old.
  2. Paintings and carvings have stayed through the years though. Many have been used to ensure a good hunt.
  3. Egyptian ideas spread over Africa.
  4. Bronze statues were being made in Nigeria by the 9th century.
  5. Architectural style of Zimbabwe very different.
  6. Artist like Pablo Picasso was influenced by the African Art.
  7. most African art conceptual.
  8. All African art was used for their daily life or ceremonial purposes.
  9. Art gave a person symbolic power.


Buddhism,
  1. The door to understanding, the gateway to the temple, the torana. Made of granite and has the teachings engraved in it.
  2. Buddha art work has a feel of serenity.
  3. When Buddha died, the belief split into big boat and little boat.
  4. People were able to take wood carving techniques into stone to build large stupas with detail.
  5. 3 umbrellas on top symbolize three stages of heaven.
  6. Largest Buddhist shrine in the world is Bororbudur, in Indonesia.
  7. Kuan Yin Hall completed in 1985
  8. Simplistic beautiful design to the Chinese temples, built in Tang Dynasty



3.How do the videos relate to the text:
       The videos relate to the text because they are both giving the best information to understand the culture and put you in their shoes. The text and videos show you how the civilizations grew through their art and how it was used.

4.What was my opinion of the films:
        I thought the videos were very informational and gave me the information I was looking for. The Buddhism video was hard to understand but gave good visuals and a background story to help understand he way the Buddhist lived along with their art.
