Module 13 and 14 Video Review

First Video:BBC Culture Show, Tate Modern
key concepts:
  • People are more likely to respect the institution if it has a sense of principles.
  • sometimes two opposing artist ways go together seamlessly in an exhibition.
  • You don't always need a lot of art history background to understand the right exhibit.
  • The 60s and 70s art is starting to fill a gap for art curators.

Did the video relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project?
Yes, this video was able to give advice on putting together an art exhibit better  in my opinion) better than the other videos. This video had shown many examples in a short amount of time and wasn't an interview style.

Second Video: An Acquiring Mind..
Key Concepts
  • Philippe made an exhibit to span around the globe and century's
  • respects the objects
  • MET owns two perfect manuscripts
  • some paintings chose to create speculation
  • clothes or drapery is also used in the met
  • over 100 curators at the MET with the job to enhance the METs look
  • a "dry run" is done for curators to try to sell the idea of bringing what they want into the museum.
  • bought a piece at action with little to no information on the piece.
  • has a  panel commission for king of Spain in pristine condition  but that does't always happen so the MET has a conservationist to to conserve the work for years and years to come.
  • only place that has a stained glass conservation
  • some pieces need to be left broken
  • some works need to have the perfect room to be seen as they were made to.
  • only Egyptian temple in the western hemisphere gift from Egyptian government.
  • most comprehensive collection of Asian art in the west

Did the video relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project?
Yes, this video helped my understanding of an art curator because it showed the time and all the steps going into making an exhibit.

Third video: The Lowdown on Lowbrow
Key Concepts:
  • lowbrow is a complected opinionated art form mixed with surrealist, sometimes pornography, and pop work
  • started with hot-rods and naked girls with a name that just stuck. Name lowbrow from Robert Williams
  • Pop culture references
  • many lowbrow artist use items that they have or desire, linking the work to consumerism
  • 40s-70s the lowbrow aesthetic
  • McCarthyism happening at the time affected the art.
  • Developing consumerism culture in the US helped spark this type of art.

Did the video relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project?
I felt the video did not relate to our project but it was informational and fun to look at this style which I was not familiar with.

What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
I felt the first two films I watched was very helpful towards my project in understanding everything that went into it but the final video just felt like a video to inform us on a type of art we may not know about or had known the name to. I felt as though all of these videos were in fact informational and enjoyable to watch.
