Architecture Video Reviews

I watched the videos,"Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art" and  "Architecture: The Science of Design"

Key concepts I learned:

-Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art

  1. Architecture can be inspired by painting or other art forms
  2. Modern architecture is inspired by the avant garde art movement, new different and non traditional.
  3. Architecture can reflect the feeling, trends, and concepts going on in that time period.

-Architecture: The Science of Design
  1. Discovery of steel and concrete brought us the skyscraper.
  2. Super structure is everything above ground
  3. Sub structure is everything below ground, the stability comes from the sub structure and can go past 60 meters below ground.
  4. High winds can make a 100 story building sway up to a meter.
How do the films relate to the text?

The first film "Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art", Was hard to relate to the text because it focused more on Gehry but they did explain the process that Gehry has which the artistic process and inspiration is also brought up in the text. The second video, "Architecture: The Science of Design", Discussed the necessities for skyscrapers like the reinforced concrete, the book also goes into detail to explain this among other key points to keeping the skyscraper up where it should be.

Opinion on the films? How do they add to the depth of architecture?

I thought the first film was informative on the artist but I felt it could have given more background knowledge on architecture for people who aren't sure on the process and architecture. It did show a different side of architecture than I am familiar with and informed me on the artistic process. The second video was more informative and interesting to me. It explained the details of making high rise buildings and why it started which was something I was always curious about.
