Module 8, video review.

For the first video, More Human Than Human.

Key Concepts I Learned.

  1. Venus of Willendorf was made to deliberately have no face and arms, other like it were made from different civilizations and they too had avoided the arms and face while exaggerating the breast, waist and thighs.
  2. 5000 BC Egypt became a full civilization on the Nile. They started having a hierarchy and agriculture.
  3. Egyptians first used the human figure in all their art, for tombs, jars, and decorations.
  4. Egyptian figures were still unrealistic but were not exaggerated like the Venus of Willendorf
  5. More realistic figures came later on with the Greeks
How does it relate to the text?
This video relates to the text because they both went through the time line process of the human figure in art. The video gave more visuals that helped with the understanding of the art of the human figure but still gave the details like in the text.

What is my opinion on the video and how does it add depth to understanding the reading?
I thought the video was very informational and gave many visuals to help understand. I was very lengthy  but I thought it was needed to get all the information in there. They went though the years starting at the first human figure made in art and went from there to show why we see the human figure as we do today. with the video and the text together now I believe I have a firm understanding on the art of the human figure through the years leading to now.

For the video of my choice, The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure

Explain why you chose the video.
I chose this video because it seemed to be the most interesting for me. I have always been interested in Greek art and this seemed like it would be able to tie everything together for me.

Key concepts I learned:
  1. Greece started to see art as realistic not stylistic.
  2. They were obsessed with the human bod and ability to form.
  3. Picasso was one of many to be influenced by the Greeks.
  4. At first working with marble cause a more abstract form until they learned the material
  5. Most figures were of woman at first, then became more diverse.
  6. "Man is the measure of all things". Man became center of everything.
  7. Body and muscle began to relax in sculptures. Began to mix idealism and realism.
How does it relate to the text?
This video relates to the text because hey both discuss the beauty the Greeks saw towards the human figure. They both gave many of the popular examples of Greek figure sculpture and produced many of the same vocabulary.

What was my opinion on the video? How did it add depth to the reading?
I felt this video was successful in teaching new things but a lot of the information was what had been covered previously in art history classes. It did add to the reading by showing other art specialist thoughts on certain pieces and the Greeks themselves.
